The basics

What are motorized shades?

A motorized shade is a window shade with a small motor hidden inside the tube at the top. Instead of pulling a cord or a chain, you press a button and the shade rolls up or down on its own.

From the room, it looks like a clean, simple shade. You never see the motor. Ours are custom roller shades made to the exact size of your window, with a rechargeable motor, so there is no new wiring to run through your walls.

How they work

How motorized shades work, in plain English.

Four parts do all the work. None of them show once the shade is up.

01 · The motor

It lives inside the tube

The fabric rolls onto a tube at the top of the window. The motor sits inside that tube and turns it, up or down.

02 · The battery

Charge it like a phone

The motor runs on a rechargeable battery. When it gets low, you plug in the charger. No electrician and no new wiring.

03 · The stops

It stops in the right spot

Each shade is set to stop at the same top and bottom point every time. It never rolls too far or leaves a gap.

04 · The control

One button, many shades

Shades can be grouped, so a whole room or a whole floor moves together with one tap.

Ways to control them

Tap it, schedule it, or forget about it.

These are the common ways motorized shades are controlled. At your consultation we show you the controls that come with your shades.

A remote

A small handheld remote. Press up, down, or stop. Simple enough for anyone in the house.

Your phone

Open or close your shades from an app on your phone, from the couch or from bed.

A schedule

Shades go down when the afternoon sun hits and up in the morning, without anyone touching them.

A whole room at once

Group the shades in a room, or a whole floor, so they all move together with one tap.

One shade at a time

Move just one shade when that's all you need. Lower the one by the TV and leave the rest open.

Voice and smart home?

Many motorized shades can work with Alexa or Google Home through a hub. If that matters to you, tell us at the consultation and we'll tell you straight what works with yours.

Why go motorized

Shades that work for you, not the other way around.

Motorized shades are not just about the button. Here is what changes in your day.

No more walking room to room

Open or close every shade on the floor at once. Mornings and evenings take one tap.

Windows you can finally reach

Tall windows, two-story rooms, and windows behind furniture all open and close with no ladder and no stretching.

Safer for kids and pets

There are no cords or chains hanging down for little hands or paws to grab.

Less sun on your floors

Shades that close on a schedule keep strong afternoon sun off your floors, rugs and furniture, even on days you forget.

A lived-in look when you're away

On a schedule, your shades still open in the morning and close at night while you're on vacation.

A cleaner-looking window

Nothing hanging down the side of the window. Just the fabric, sitting where you want it.

Who they're for

When motorized makes the biggest difference.

  • 01
Two-story great roomsThe tall windows you have never been able to cover, or never been able to reach.
  • 02
Ten or more windowsA whole floor that opens and closes together, instead of ten trips around the house.
  • 03
The room nobody sits in after lunchWest- and south-facing rooms where glare and heat are handled on a schedule.
  • 04
Behind furniture or over a tubWindows that are a pain to reach every single day.
  • 05
Bedrooms and nurseriesBlackout shades that close at bedtime and open in the morning on their own, with no cords in the room.
  • 06
Homes with kids or petsEvery shade is cord-free, so there is nothing to tangle or pull.
When manual is the smarter buy

One or two easy-to-reach windows you rarely move? A manual shade does the job for less. We'll tell you that at the consultation, room by room.

Most homeowners mix them: motorized for the tall and hard-to-reach rooms, manual for the rest. That keeps the whole house finished without paying for motors where you don't need them.
Before you buy

5 mistakes people make with motorized shades.

We see these in homes all the time. Each one is easy to avoid if you know about it first.

MISTAKE 01

Buying a standard size

Store-bought shades come in set sizes and get cut down. That leaves gaps on the sides where light pours in.

Do this instead: get shades made to the exact size of each window.

MISTAKE 02

Motorizing every window

A motor on a small window you never touch is money you didn't need to spend.

Do this instead: motorize the tall and busy rooms, and go manual on the rest.

MISTAKE 03

Picking fabric on a screen

A fabric that looks warm online can look gray or see-through in your room's real light.

Do this instead: hold real samples up to your own windows before you choose.

MISTAKE 04

Measuring it yourself

A small mistake on the tape means a shade that won't fit, or a gap you see every day. And it's your money on the line.

Do this instead: let the installer measure, so the fit is their problem, not yours.

MISTAKE 05

Buying with no one to call

Online shades arrive in a box. When a motor needs help a year later, there is nobody local to come out.

Do this instead: buy from a local team that installs what it sells and comes back if something goes wrong.

Why people choose us

A local team that measures, makes and installs every shade.

You deal with the same people from the first visit to the last shade on the wall. No call center, no hand-offs.

Questions

Motorized shades, answered.

How much do motorized shades cost?

Motorized shades cost more than manual shades because every shade has its own motor. Your exact price depends on how many windows you have and how big they are, and you get it in writing at the consultation. Most projects start around $2,000 to $3,000 and go up with more windows or more motorized shades.

Are motorized shades worth the extra cost?

For tall windows, hard-to-reach windows, or a whole floor you want to move at once, usually yes. Manual shades are the lower-cost way to finish the rest. We price both side by side at the consultation so you can see the difference.

How are motorized shades powered?

Our motorized shades run on rechargeable batteries, so there is no new wiring to run through your walls. When a battery gets low, you plug in the charger. We show you how charging works on install day.

Can motorized shades be hardwired instead?

Some homes, mostly new builds and big remodels, choose wired motors. Most homeowners go rechargeable because nothing has to be opened up in the walls. If you are building or remodeling, tell us at the consultation and we will talk through what fits your home.

Do motorized shades work with Alexa or Google Home?

Many motorized shades can, usually through a small hub. If voice control or a smart-home system matters to you, tell us at the consultation and we will tell you straight what works with your shades before you buy.

Can I motorize just a few windows?

Yes. Many homeowners motorize only the tall or hard-to-reach windows and use manual shades everywhere else. You decide room by room.

How long does it take from consultation to install?

It depends on how many shades you order, and you get a timeline with your written price. One customer put it this way: measurement and fabric selection took 30 minutes, and the install took 45 minutes the next week.

What if a motor ever stops working?

Call us at (847) 305-3115 and we will come take a look. You deal with the same local team that installed your shades.

Do I have to buy anything at the consultation?

No. You get a written price and take as long as you want to decide. The consultation is free and there is no obligation.
