Every room has a different job. Tap one to see the problems we usually fix there and the shade we'd usually recommend.

White light-filtering roller shades over a wide living room windowLiving & family rooms
Living room

Bright all day, with no glare on the TV.

Sound familiar?

  • Afternoon glare on the TV.
  • The street can see right in.
  • Old blinds that don't match the rest of the room.

What we usually recommend

Light-filtering or zebra shades: the room stays bright, the glare softens, and people can't see in during the day. Motorized if there are a lot of windows.

Black blackout roller shades on bedroom windowsPrimary & guest bedrooms
Bedrooms

Dark when you sleep. Light when you wake.

Sound familiar?

  • Summer sun at 5 a.m.
  • A streetlight shining in all night.
  • Thin blinds that glow instead of block.

What we usually recommend

Blackout shades, mounted to keep light from sneaking around the edges. Motorized ones can open on their own at the time you want to wake up.

Nurseries & kids' rooms
Nursery & kids' rooms

Naps that happen, and nothing to pull on.

Sound familiar?

  • Too bright for a midday nap.
  • Cords or chains hanging near the crib.
  • Kids yanking the blinds crooked.

What we usually recommend

Blackout shades for naps and early summer mornings, cord-free or motorized so nothing hangs down. Ask us about the cord-free options at the consultation.

Kitchen & dining

Soft light for meals, and easy to keep clean.

Sound familiar?

  • Slats that collect grease and dust.
  • The window over the sink is hard to reach.
  • Evening sun right in your eyes at dinner.

What we usually recommend

Light-filtering roller shades: one clean panel, no slats to wipe. Motorized over the sink or behind a counter, where reaching is a pain.

Bathrooms

Privacy without a dark room.

Sound familiar?

  • A window right over the tub.
  • You want daylight, but not the neighbors looking in.
  • Fabric curtains that never look clean.

What we usually recommend

Light-filtering or zebra shades: daylight in, privacy kept. Motorized over a tub, so you never have to lean across it.

Home office

No glare on the screen, no lamp at noon.

Sound familiar?

  • Glare on the monitor every afternoon.
  • Squinting on video calls.
  • Closing the blinds means turning the lights on.

What we usually recommend

Solar or light-filtering shades: they cut the glare and keep the room bright. Zebra if you want to fine-tune the light during the day.

Shades on tall arched bay windowsGreat rooms, bays, tall glass
Tall & two-story windows

The windows you've never been able to cover.

Sound familiar?

  • Windows too high to reach without a ladder.
  • The great room bakes every afternoon.
  • Bare upper windows, because nothing ever got done there.

What we usually recommend

Motorized shades. One tap or a schedule handles the windows nobody can reach, so the room finally looks finished.

Media rooms & basements
Media room & basement

Movie night at noon.

Sound familiar?

  • Glare washes out the screen.
  • Small basement windows that let in a beam of light.
  • The room only works after dark.

What we usually recommend

Blackout shades, so the room goes dark any time of day. Motorized if you want the whole room to close with one tap when the movie starts.

Plan your whole home

How to get the whole house right, in four steps.

This is how we plan a home at the consultation. You can do it all at once, or a few rooms at a time.

01 · The job

Decide what each room needs

Light, privacy, or dark. Living spaces usually want light. Bedrooms usually want dark.

02 · The look

Pick one family of shades

Use the same style everywhere and change only the fabric, so the whole house looks finished from inside and from the street.

03 · The motors

Motorize where it helps

Tall windows, rooms with lots of glass, and windows that are hard to reach. Manual everywhere else.

04 · The timing

All at once, or in rounds

Start with the rooms that bother you most. Use the same style and fabrics later, and the whole house matches.

Shades we make

Everything that rolls onto a tube.

We make custom roller-style shades, measured to each window. Every one comes manual or motorized.

We also make cellular (honeycomb) shades, Roman shades and shutters. Ask about them at your free in-home consultation.

Manual or motorized

Most homes mix them.

Motors where they make life easier, manual where they don't. We price both, room by room, at the consultation.

Manual

For the easy windows

Raised and lowered by hand. The lower-cost way to finish the rooms where windows are easy to reach.

  • Lowest cost per window
  • Nothing to charge
  • Ask about cord-free options for kids' rooms
Motorized

For the hard ones

Tall windows, rooms full of glass, windows over a tub or behind a couch. One tap, or on a schedule.

  • No cords at all
  • A whole room or floor at once
  • Rechargeable, no new wiring

Cheat sheet

Which shade for which room.

A starting point, not a rule. At the consultation we look at which way each room faces and how you use it.

Before you buy

5 mistakes people make shading a whole house.

Most of these come from buying one room at a time with no plan. Each one is easy to avoid.

MISTAKE 01

A different look in every room

Blinds here, curtains there, a shade from a big-box store in the kitchen. From the street, the house looks unfinished.

Do this instead: pick one family of shades and change only the fabric room to room.

MISTAKE 02

The same fabric everywhere

One fabric for the whole house means bedrooms that are too bright or living rooms that are too dark.

Do this instead: light-filtering where you live, blackout where you sleep.

MISTAKE 03

Motorizing all or nothing

Motors on every small window cost money you don't need to spend. No motors at all leaves the tall windows untouched.

Do this instead: motorize the tall and hard-to-reach windows, manual on the rest.

MISTAKE 04

Measuring it yourself

A small mistake on the tape means a shade that doesn't fit, or a gap you see every day. And it's your money on the line.

Do this instead: let the installer measure, so the fit is their problem, not yours.

MISTAKE 05

Cords in kids' rooms

A hanging cord or chain near a crib or a bed is a risk you don't need.

Do this instead: go cord-free or motorized in kids' rooms. Ask us at the consultation.

What are the best window shades for each room?

Usually light-filtering or zebra shades in living rooms, kitchens and bathrooms, blackout in bedrooms, nurseries and media rooms, and solar in home offices and rooms with big glass. Motorized shades work best on tall or hard-to-reach windows.

Should every room have the same shades?

Using the same style of shade in every room makes the whole house look finished. Change the fabric room to room, so each room gets the right amount of light and privacy.

Can I mix motorized and manual shades?

Yes, and most homeowners do. Motorize the tall, hard-to-reach or busy windows and use manual shades everywhere else. We price both side by side at the consultation.

Can I do a few rooms now and the rest later?

Yes. Many people start with the rooms that bother them most. Using the same style and fabrics later keeps the whole house matching.

How much does it cost to do a whole house?

It depends on how many windows you have, how big they are, the fabrics, and how many are motorized, and you get a written price at the consultation. Most projects start around $2,000 to $3,000 and go up with more windows or more motorized shades.

Do you make cellular, Roman shades or shutters?

Yes. Most of our work is custom roller-style shades: motorized and manual roller, solar, zebra, blackout, and sheer or light-filtering. We also make cellular (honeycomb) shades, Roman shades and shutters. Ask about them when you book.

What happens at the free consultation?

We come to your home, walk the rooms with you, bring real fabric samples, measure every window, and give you a written price room by room. There is nothing to buy that day.

How long does it take from consultation to install?

It depends on how many shades you order, and you get a timeline with your written price. One customer put it this way: measurement and fabric selection took 30 minutes, and the install took 45 minutes the next week.

Do you speak Polish?

Yes. Mówimy po polsku. Just let us know when you call or book.
