The basics

What are roller shades?

A roller shade is one flat piece of fabric that rolls onto a tube at the top of your window. Pull it down for shade and privacy. Roll it up and it tucks almost out of sight.

No slats to dust and nothing to tilt. Just clean fabric, made to the exact size of your window, in the amount of light you want for that room.

How they work

How roller shades work, in plain English.

Four simple parts. That's why roller shades look so clean.

01 · The tube

It all rolls onto a tube

A tube sits at the top of the window, inside the frame or above it. The fabric winds around it as the shade goes up.

02 · The fabric

You choose the light

One panel of fabric does all the work. Its weave decides how much light and privacy you get, from soft and bright to full blackout.

03 · The bottom bar

It hangs straight

A slim bar along the bottom adds weight, so the fabric hangs flat and even every time you lower it.

04 · The control

By hand or by motor

Raise and lower it by hand, or add a motor and move it with one tap or on a schedule.

Fabrics and light

Pick how much light each room gets.

Roller fabrics run from bright and soft to fully dark. We bring real samples so you see them in your own light.

Dark solar roller shades that keep the outdoor view in a family room
Solar

Cut the glare, keep the view

An open weave that tames bright sun and glare while you still see outside. Made for sunny rooms and big windows.

  • Less glare on screens
  • You keep your view
  • Sunrooms, west- and south-facing rooms

Blackout

Dark rooms for real sleep

A solid fabric that blocks the light. Sleep in, nap the baby, or watch a movie at noon.

  • Blocks the light
  • Full privacy, day and night
  • Bedrooms, nurseries, media rooms

Not sure which one? Most homes use more than one. We help you pick room by room at the consultation. Want a deeper look? See blackout shades or sheer & light-filtering.

Manual or motorized

Same shade. Two ways to move it.

Every roller shade can be raised by hand or with a motor. You can choose differently for every room.

Manual

The clean, classic choice

You raise and lower the shade by hand. Simple, reliable, and the lower-cost way to finish a whole house.

  • Lowest cost
  • Nothing to charge
  • Best for windows you can easily reach

Have young kids or pets? Ask about cord-free options at the consultation.

Motorized

One tap, every shade

A small rechargeable motor hides inside the tube. Move one shade or a whole room at once, or put them on a schedule.

  • No cords at all
  • Great for tall or hard-to-reach windows
  • Rechargeable, no new wiring

Why roller shades

Why so many homes choose roller shades.

They are the simplest shade there is. That's exactly why they look so good.

A clean, modern look

One flat panel of fabric. No slats, no tangled strings, nothing busy. It fits almost any style of home.

Rolls up out of the way

When it's up, the shade tucks into a slim roll at the top. Your full window and your view are back.

The light you want

Light-filtering, solar or blackout. You pick the fabric for each room, so every room gets the right amount of light.

Easy to keep clean

No slats to wipe one by one. Most roller fabrics just need a light dusting now and then.

One look for the whole house

Use the same style in every room and just change the fabric. The whole house looks finished and matched.

Smart on cost

Manual roller shades are the lower-cost way to finish a lot of windows. Add motors only where they really help.

Some windows suit a different style. We also make cellular (honeycomb) shades, Roman shades and shutters, and we'll help you pick the right one at the consultation.

Which fabric?

Light-filtering, solar or blackout, side by side.

The biggest choice on a roller shade is the fabric. Here is how the three compare.

Before you buy

5 mistakes people make with roller shades.

Roller shades are simple. These are the few ways people still get them wrong.

MISTAKE 01

Buying a standard size

Store-bought shades come in set sizes and get cut down. That leaves gaps on the sides where light pours in.

Do this instead: get shades made to the exact size of each window.

MISTAKE 02

Solar shades in a bedroom

Solar fabric keeps your view, so at night with the lights on, people outside can see in. And it won't make the room dark.

Do this instead: use blackout where you sleep and solar where you live.

MISTAKE 03

Expecting a pitch-black room

Even blackout fabric can let a thin line of light in around the edges, depending on how the shade is mounted.

Do this instead: tell us how dark you want the room, and we'll plan the mount around it.

MISTAKE 04

Picking fabric on a screen

A white that looks warm online can look gray, or see-through, in your room's real light.

Do this instead: hold real samples up to your own windows before you choose.

MISTAKE 05

Forgetting about cords

A hanging cord or chain in a kid's room or by the dog's favorite window is a risk you don't need.

Do this instead: go cord-free or motorized in kids' rooms. Ask us at the consultation.

How much do custom roller shades cost?

Manual roller shades are the lower-cost way to finish a house, and motorized ones cost more because each shade has its own motor. Your exact price depends on how many windows you have, how big they are, and the fabric, and you get it in writing at the consultation. Most projects start around $2,000 to $3,000 and go up with more windows or more motorized shades.

What is the difference between light-filtering, solar and blackout?

Light-filtering fabric keeps the room bright and gives you privacy during the day. Solar fabric cuts glare while you still see outside. Blackout fabric blocks the light for bedrooms and media rooms. Most homes use more than one.

Can people see in at night with solar shades?

Yes, usually. Solar fabric is made to let you see out, so when it's dark outside and your lights are on, people can see in. For night privacy, choose light-filtering or blackout in those rooms.

Do blackout roller shades make a room completely dark?

The fabric blocks the light, but a thin line of light can still show around the edges, depending on how the shade is mounted. Tell us how dark you want the room at the consultation and we will plan the mount around it.

Are roller shades cordless?

Motorized roller shades have no cords at all. For manual shades, ask us about cord-free options at the consultation, especially for kids' rooms and homes with pets.

Can roller shades be motorized?

Yes. Any roller shade can be raised by hand or with a small rechargeable motor that hides inside the tube. Many homeowners motorize the tall or hard-to-reach windows and keep the rest manual.

How do I clean roller shades?

Most roller fabrics just need a light dusting with a soft brush or a vacuum on low. We tell you how to care for your exact fabric when we install it.

How long does it take from consultation to install?

It depends on how many shades you order, and you get a timeline with your written price. One customer put it this way: measurement and fabric selection took 30 minutes, and the install took 45 minutes the next week.

Do I have to buy anything at the consultation?

No. You get a written price and take as long as you want to decide. The consultation is free and there is no obligation.
